CAN GRAPHIC DESIGN SAVE LIVES
For my dissertation, I tackled the pressing issue of rural male suicide, asking: Can graphic design save lives? Focusing on the power of typography and visual communication, I explored how design can raise awareness and support vulnerable communities.
To make my work feel personal and authentic, I chose to step away from digital and used screen printing, a tactile process that connects to the farming community I aimed to reach. Each print carried unique imperfections, making the outcome more meaningful.
The book itself features a restrained design with a calm, reflective layout. I used a muted green palette to subtly reference agriculture and incorporated infographics, quotes, and photos of rural life to engage the audience. The bold cover contrasts with the softer interior, inviting readers into a thoughtful space to reflect on the serious issue of mental health.
This project showcases how graphic design, when done thoughtfully, can be both impactful and life-changing.
